Nobody Is Talking About Your Work. Here's Why.

Here is a test. Describe your product to a stranger in one sentence, and watch their face.

If the face doesn't move, you have a problem. Not a marketing problem. A remarkable problem.

Remarkable does not mean impressive. It means worth a remark. It means somebody, somewhere, felt compelled to turn to another person and say did you see this. That is the whole mechanism. Word of mouth is not luck. It is the direct result of building something someone can't help but mention.

Most businesses never test this. They ship the safe version, the one that offends nobody, delights nobody, and gets discussed by nobody. Then they wonder why the marketing budget has to work so hard.

Safe is a tax you pay forever

A safe product needs advertising because it gave people no reason to talk about it. That's not a coincidence. That's the deal you made when you sanded off every edge.

Every dollar you spend trying to get attention is a dollar you're spending because the thing itself didn't earn any. That's not a criticism. It's an invoice. And it's due every single month, for as long as the product stays safe.

The remarkable version costs more up front, in courage mostly, and less forever after. The safe version costs less up front and bills you monthly, in perpetuity, for attention it should have generated on its own.

Nobody is the customer

Here is the part that scares people. To be remarkable to someone, you have to be irrelevant to almost everyone else.

The businesses that get talked about are almost never the ones trying to appeal to everybody. They picked a smaller room and decorated it so well that the people in it couldn't stop describing it to the people who weren't.

You don't need the whole market to notice you. You need the right ten people to be unable to shut up about you. Ten people who tell two people each is a marketing department you didn't have to hire.

The question that actually matters

Stop asking how do we get more attention. Start asking what did we build that deserves it.

That's a harder question. It doesn't have a media plan. It has a mirror in it. But it's the only question that changes the invoice from monthly to none.

Go build the version that makes the stranger's face move. Everything else is just the tax you pay for not doing that yet.
